Amplify Partnerships Propel Five Ocean Startups Toward Commercialization
CANADA — (October 28, 2026) — From seaweed-based alternatives to petroleum plastics to electric marine propulsion and cleaner port operations, five Canadian startups are taking important steps toward commercialization with support from the Ocean Startup Project's (OSP) Amplify program.
Selected for their potential to advance Canada's sustainable ocean economy, the five companies are developing innovative solutions to some of the most pressing challenges facing the ocean sector and beyond.
Now in its second year, Amplify supports ocean technology startups at a critical stage of growth, helping founders move beyond product validation and toward commercial deployment, customer adoption and market traction. The program combines targeted, non-dilutive funding with the expertise and networks of established innovation organizations, building on existing programs to help promising technologies reach their next milestone.
"Bringing a new technology to market is rarely a journey that founders can navigate alone. It takes the right connections, access to resources and opportunities to demonstrate value in real-world environments,” said Iliass Lamrini, Program Manager at the Ocean Startup Project. "What makes Amplify so impactful is the collaboration behind it. By working alongside our ecosystem partners and building on the support they're already providing, we can help founders overcome commercialization challenges, reach critical milestones sooner and create stronger pathways to growth."
The five startups selected for the 2026 Amplify program include:
Alaagi Inc. (Nova Scotia) — Developing compostable, high-barrier packaging films made from Atlantic Canadian seaweed to replace petroleum-based plastics in cold-chain food packaging.
BioLabMate Composite Inc. (Newfoundland and Labrador) — Developing seaweed-derived thermoplastic bioresins to replace conventional fossil-based plastics in laboratory consumables and other single-use products.
EcoMarine Technologies Inc. (Nova Scotia) — Commercializing a compact, shaftless electric marine propulsion system for uncrewed surface vessels, marine robotics, workboats and demanding ocean environments.
Flux Lines (Québec) — Developing a battery barge solution that provides mobile shore power for cargo ships while serving as grid-connected energy storage for port operations.
Templar Marine Inc. (Nova Scotia) — Building fully electric commercial vessels and developing the supporting technologies and infrastructure needed to help operators transition to profitable electric fleets.
Amplify reflects a shared commitment to building a stronger, more connected ocean innovation ecosystem across Canada. Rather than creating new pathways in isolation, the program works alongside established accelerators, innovation hubs and early-adopter initiatives to strengthen the support already available to founders.
Through this collaborative model, participating startups can access complementary funding to undertake commercial pilots, conduct field trials, deploy technologies and demonstrate their solutions to prospective customers and investors.
This round of Amplify is delivered in collaboration with 2 Degrés, Emera ideaHUB, Genesis and Invest Nova Scotia, whose programs and connections play an important role in helping Canadian ocean startups advance toward commercialization.
Together, OSP and its partners are helping turn promising ocean innovations into commercially viable solutions while strengthening Canada's growing sustainable ocean economy.
